Trekking Hellas guide · Kalyvia, west side of Olympus
A 4x4 lifts you from Kalyvia, a village on the western side of the mountain, to the Christakis hut at about 2,400 m, and a Trekking Hellas guide leads you past Skolio and along Kakoskala to Mytikas. It's the only way here to stand on the summit in one day, because the jeep skips the long forest climb.

You meet the guide at 08:00 in the central square of Kalyvia (Kalivia), a village about 20 minutes from Elassona on the Thessaly side of Olympus. Getting there is up to you: the price covers the 4x4 from Kalyvia, not the drive from Thessaloniki. The jeep leaves around 08:15, on tarmac and then a long dirt road, to the Christakis hut at about 2,400 to 2,430 m. The walk starts around 09:30. Trekking Hellas' itinerary puts the snack break on the Kakoskala plateau (2,860 m) around 11:30, the summit around 13:00, the hut around 16:00 and Kalyvia around 17:00.
Starting at 2,400 m cuts out what makes the classic route a two-day job. You still climb about 500 m, and the summit section takes 2 to 4 hours depending on the group, with real scrambling on exposed rock along Kakoskala. The listing caps the group at 8 and includes a helmet and harness. If the exposure gets to you on the day, there's an easier goal: Skolio, 2,911 m, the second-highest peak, reached without helmet or harness.
Two caveats. Kalyvia is remote: from Thessaloniki it's a long drive, and the sensible plan is a night in Elassona before. And you go from the car park straight to almost 2,900 m with no time to adjust, so some people feel the altitude and fitness matters. The season runs June to October. Book for the summit only if you're happy on your hands on steep rock; it isn't easy, even in a day.

Hard. You climb about 500 m from a high start and finish with a scramble on exposed rock, which is why the helmet and harness are included. Our guide on how hard Olympus is goes through it.
