How hard is it to climb Mount Olympus?

Most of Olympus is a long, steep mountain walk. The last 100 metres to Mytikas are not. Here is the route stage by stage, how long each part takes, and who should go with a guide.

Climbing Mount Olympus means two different things. The first is the walk from the road end at Prionia, 1,100 m, up through beech and pine to the refuges and the bare ridge at Skala, 2,866 m. It is hard work, and any fit hiker can do it in summer. The second is the final step onto Mytikas, 2,917 m, the highest point in Greece. That part is a scramble on exposed limestone, with a helmet, and it is where most of the accidents happen.

The figures below come from the route pages of Refuge A Spilios Agapitos, the Greek route database Topoguide and Visit Olympus. A day trip to Dion and the Enipeas gorge is a different outing altogether: it tops out around Prionia and does not climb the mountain.

The quick answer

No, Mount Olympus is not an easy climb. The trail from Prionia to Refuge A is rated moderate (about 3 hours), and the ridge to Skala and Skolio is a steep walk any fit hiker can manage in summer. Mytikas itself needs hands-on scrambling on exposed rock via Kakoskala or the Louki couloir, with a helmet. Most people take two days with a night in a refuge, from June to October.

Is Mount Olympus an easy climb?

No. The lower trail is moderate, the ridge above Refuge A is rated difficult, and the final 100 m to Mytikas is a scramble on exposed rock where a fall can kill.

Here is the standard eastern route, the one most people take, split the way the refuges describe it. Times are for a normal pace with a day pack, without stops.

Prionia to Mytikas, totalAbout 9 kmAbout 1,820 m6 to 7 hours upDifficult

The sources disagree a little: Refuge A rates the walk to Skala as medium, while its Mytikas page and Visit Olympus call the full refuge-to-summit stretch difficult. The grade jumps at the rock, not on the path. Coming down takes nearly as long as going up, and your legs are tired by then.

Can you walk to the top of Mount Olympus?

You can walk to Skala (2,866 m) and Skolio (2,911 m), the second-highest summit. Mytikas, 6 m higher, needs your hands on the rock.

From Refuge A the path climbs through the last pines and onto open scree. At the Zonaria junction, 2,480 m, it splits. Straight on, the ridge path leads to Skala in about an hour; the last kilometre is loose gravel and, according to the refuge's own route page, the most tiring part of the day. Skolio is a 15-minute detour from a fork just below Skala.

Skolio is the best walking summit on Olympus. You stand 6 m below Mytikas, look straight across at it and at Stefani, the Throne of Zeus, and you never take your hands out of your pockets. More than 10,000 people a year visit the mountain, and most of them stop at Skala or Skolio. No shame in that.

How long does it take to walk up Mount Olympus?

About 6 to 7 hours from Prionia to Mytikas, and 4 to 5 hours back down. Most people split it: 3 hours to Refuge A on day one, the summit and the descent on day two.

The two-day plan is the standard for a reason. Day one is the forest walk on the E4 from Prionia to Refuge A, with water at Prionia and a stream at Magalias. The last third is an open, sunny ravine, so go early. You sleep at the refuge, leave at first light, reach the summit before the afternoon cloud builds, and are back at Prionia by mid-afternoon. Bookatrekking calls Refuge A the main base camp for exactly this.

A few strong hikers do Prionia to Mytikas and back in one day: about 1,820 m up and the same down, 11 to 12 hours of moving. We wouldn't. You reach the scramble tired and late, when storms are most likely. If you want to start from the sea, the full E4 from Litochoro (Myloi, 400 m) to Refuge A is 17 km and about 8 hours, per the refuge.

The guided 2-day Mytikas hike takes a longer, quieter line: from Gortsia via the Petrostrouga refuge to the Plateau of the Muses (about 13 km on day one), a night at the Giosos Apostolidis refuge at 2,697 m, then the summit and a 12.5 km descent to Prionia.

Two days with mountain guides, a refuge bed at 2,697 m and helmets for the scramble.

What is the final scramble to Mytikas like?

Short, steep and exposed. Kakoskala is a ridge of ledges and a slab with big drops; the Louki couloir is a 150 m gully with polished steps and loose rock above you.

Kakoskala, "the bad stairs", leaves the ridge just past Skala. You drop onto ledges, cross a steep slab and climb back up to the summit block, following yellow and red paint. SummitPost calls it slightly easier but exposed: the moves are not hard, but there is air below you.

The Louki couloir starts from the Zonaria traverse. It is about 150 m high, takes 30 to 45 minutes, and has four steeper steps. Topoguide grades the first and third as easy climbing, 2nd to 3rd alpine degree, and warns the first step is worn smooth by thousands of boots. The real danger is the people above you: rockfall. The Refuge A route page calls the last stretch somewhat dangerous and asks for a great deal of care. Red arrows mark the line.

  • A helmet is required in Louki, per Topoguide. Refuge A rents and lends them.
  • No rope or harness is needed in dry summer conditions for most people. Guided groups carry them and use them on the hard moves.
  • Up one, down the other is common. Many go up Louki and down Kakoskala, or the reverse.
  • Snow changes everything. With old snow in the gully, this is ice-axe and crampon ground.

Can a beginner climb Mount Olympus?

A fit beginner can reach Skala and Skolio in good weather. For Mytikas, a hiker with no scrambling experience should go with a mountain guide.

Visit Olympus recommends a guide for less experienced hikers; Discover Greece calls one recommended, though not required. Our view: if you have never used your hands on rock with a drop below, Mytikas is the wrong place to learn. Go with a guide, or stop at Skolio and enjoy the view of the summit.

What "fit" means here: you can walk uphill for 6 hours with a pack, and you have done a day with 1,000 m of ascent before. The tour operators set firm limits. The 2-day Mytikas hike lists itself as not suitable for people over 60, under 18, over 100 kg, with low fitness or a fear of heights. The one-day summit climb takes ages 13 to 70, up to 130 kg, and nobody with heart problems or vertigo.

How dangerous is Mount Olympus? Accidents in 2025 and 2026

Dangerous enough to take seriously. Greek media reported at least five deaths on the mountain between April 2025 and October 2026, most of them near the summit or on the descent.

No official yearly accident figures are published, only news reports. These are the ones we found:

  • April 2025: a Polish climber died after a fall (Greek City Times).
  • June 2025: a 60-year-old German woman in a climbing group fell in the Zonaria area and died; she was airlifted from the Plateau of the Muses (Greek City Times).
  • May 2026: a 25-year-old Spanish climber left Refuge A alone for Mytikas without snow boots, with snow still near the summit, and ignored advice to turn back. He was found dead in the Zonaria area after a multi-day search (To Vima).
  • August 2026: a 40-year-old Greek hiker lost his way on the descent between Louki and Kakoskala and fell into a gully (Athens Times).
  • September to October 2026: a 46-year-old Israeli hiker on a solo trip, last heard from heading for the summit, was found dead at about 1,840 m after a three-week search (To Vima).

The pattern is plain: going alone, snow out of season, losing the line on the way down, and the Zonaria to Louki area. Thousands of people reach the high summits safely every summer. The ones who get hurt often broke one of these rules. Our 2026 safety update covers the rescue numbers and what changed this year.

Should you climb Mount Olympus with a guide, and in one day or two?

Go with a guide if you have not scrambled before, and take two days unless you use the 4x4 approach from Kalyvia. Experienced scramblers can do the classic route on their own in settled weather.

The one-day climb from Kalyvia cuts out most of the ascent: the 4x4 drives a dirt track to the Christakis hut, and the listing has you on the summit around 13:00 and back in the village by about 17:00. It is the fastest way to stand on Mytikas, but you meet the scramble without a night to acclimatise to the mountain, and you still need to get yourself to Kalyvia. The 2-day hike includes transport from Thessaloniki and the refuge, which is why it costs more. Note its cancellation fees: this is not a free-cancellation booking. How fit do you need to be, and what should you bring?

Fit enough for 6 to 7 hours uphill with about 1,800 m of ascent, then a long descent. Bring a helmet (or rent one), real boots, 2 to 3 litres of water and warm layers even in August.

  • Boots with grip. Trainers slip on the polished Louki steps and the loose gravel below Skala.
  • Water. Visit Olympus says 2 to 3 litres in summer. Refill at Prionia and the refuges.
  • Layers. The base can pass 30 C while the summit sits in fog and wind near 5 to 10 C. A fleece and a waterproof jacket go in the pack every time.
  • For the refuge. A sleeping bag liner, a towel and a head torch: Refuge A has lights out from 22:00 to 06:00 and unheated showers, per its house rules.
  • A booked bed. Pre-booking Refuge A is essential at weekends; it opens from mid-May to late October.
  • An early start. Afternoon storms are common in July. Be off the summit rock by midday.

Frequently asked questions

Do Mount Olympus day trips climb the mountain?

No. The day trips from Thessaloniki and Athens visit Dion, Litochoro and the Enipeas gorge and top out around Prionia, 1,100 m. Only the 2-day Mytikas hike and the one-day summit climb from Kalyvia go for the top.

Do you need a permit to climb Mount Olympus?

Not on the eastern routes from Prionia or Gortsia. The Vrysopoules refuge on the western side sits inside an army training area and needs permission from the Special Forces Directorate.

Can you climb Mount Olympus in winter?

Only with winter mountaineering experience, an ice axe and crampons. Above 2,000 m the mountain is snow-covered for about nine months a year, with avalanche risk in the gullies.

How many people climb Mount Olympus each year?

More than 10,000 people visit the high mountain each year, according to Wikipedia. Most of them reach Skala or Skolio, not Mytikas.
