Booking choice: The Dion and Olympus day trip, from $57 per person. Check dates Tour details
A Mount Olympus day trip is a day at the foot of the mountain. The usual plan: the ruins and museum of Dion in the morning, lunch in a village, then a walk into the Enipeas gorge, where the river runs through pools under the cliffs. It is a lovely day. It is not a climb. Nearly every day trip tops out around Prionia, 1,100 m, about 1,800 m below the summit.
That gap is the most important thing to know before you book. If standing on Mytikas is the goal, you need two days or the guided one-day climb from the west side, covered in how hard it is to climb Olympus. For everything else, a day is plenty.
The quick answer
Yes, you can do Mount Olympus in one day if you mean the foothills: Dion, Litochoro, the Enipeas gorge and Prionia at 1,100 m. A group day trip from Thessaloniki starts at $57, from Athens at $166 with train tickets. On your own, budget about EUR 10 for Dion, a bus or train to Litochoro and EUR 30 for a taxi to Prionia. The summit does not fit in a normal day trip.

Can you do Mount Olympus in one day?
Yes for the lower mountain: Dion, Litochoro, the Enipeas gorge and Prionia fit easily into a day from Thessaloniki. The summit, Mytikas at 2,917 m, does not fit in a standard day trip.
The mountain rises almost straight from the sea, so the foothills are close. Litochoro, the base village, is about 90 km from Thessaloniki, and an asphalt road climbs 18 km from there to Prionia, the last point a car can reach on the eastern side. Everything most visitors want to see sits between the coast and that road end.
The summit is another matter. From Prionia it is 6 to 7 hours up and 4 to 5 down, with a scramble at the top. Only one tour on this site reaches it in a day: the one-day summit climb, which starts at 08:00 in Kalyvia on the west side and uses a 4x4 to reach about 2,400 m. That is a mountaineering day, not sightseeing.
What does a Mount Olympus day trip include?
Typically Dion's ruins and museum, lunch, and a short walk in the Enipeas gorge near Litochoro. Some add Platamon castle, a monastery or a longer forest hike.
Take the most-booked one, the Dion and Olympus day trip from Thessaloniki. The listing says the bus leaves Aristotelous Square at 08:00, spends the morning at the Dion archaeological site and museum with a guide, stops for lunch in a village, then walks into the Enipeas gorge. You are back in Thessaloniki around 15:30, per the listing. Dion entry and lunch are included.
The walk is short: the listing mentions about 20 minutes to the cave of Saint Dionysius, in comfortable shoes. In bad weather the trek can be swapped for Litochoro village or the Saint Dionysius monastery. A guest summed up the style: "Excellent day trip in a minibus. Our guide Iannis was very pleasant and chatty, and very knowledgeable about local history and archaeology."
Dion with a guide, lunch in a village and the Enipeas gorge, back in Thessaloniki by mid-afternoon.
Check dates for the Dion and Olympus day tripHow much is it to go to Mount Olympus for a day?
From $57 per person on a group tour from Thessaloniki, $146 for a small group of six, $166 from Athens with the train. A DIY day by bus and taxi costs roughly EUR 40 to 60 per person.
Every day option on this site, cheapest first, against the costs of doing it yourself:
| Option | From | Length | Highest point | Dion entry |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dion and Olympus day trip | $57 | 8 hours | Enipeas gorge, below 1,100 m | Included |
| Minibus tour from Katerini | $71 | 6 hours | Enipeas gorge | Check the listing |
| Private Olympus hike | $127 per person | 8 hours | Enipeas waterfall and cave | Not included (EUR 10) |
| Small-group forest hike | $146 | 8 hours | Forest trail, up to Prionia area | Included |
| Day tour from Athens | $166 | 13 hours | Enipeas gorge | Included |
| One-day summit climb | $231 | 9 hours | Mytikas, 2,917 m | Not visited |
| DIY from Thessaloniki | About EUR 40 to 60 | As long as you like | Prionia, 1,100 m, or higher on foot | EUR 10 |
The DIY sum: the train from Thessaloniki to Litochoro was listed at EUR 9 each way, a taxi from Litochoro station to the village about EUR 8 to 9, Dion EUR 10 full price, and a taxi from Litochoro up to Prionia about EUR 30 per car. Two people sharing taxis and walking back down land near EUR 50 each, before lunch; one person alone pays more. Getting from Litochoro to Dion and back without a car is the awkward part. A rental car makes the DIY day easy.
What fits in a day trip from Thessaloniki?
Dion, Litochoro and one walk in the gorge comfortably; add the drive to Prionia and the old monastery if you have a car and start by 08:00.
Thessaloniki is the natural base: about 90 km on the A1, roughly an hour to the Dion exit and 10 minutes more to Litochoro. A full DIY day by car looks like this:
- 08:00 leave Thessaloniki. Pay the tolls on the A1.
- 09:15 Dion archaeological park when it opens (08:00 from April to August) and the museum from 11:00. Allow 2 to 3 hours.
- 12:30 lunch in Litochoro.
- 14:00 drive the 18 km road toward Prionia. Stop at the ruins of the old Agios Dionysios monastery, founded in 1542, then walk the short path down to the Enipeas pools near Prionia.
- 17:30 drive back. Home by about 19:30.
If you'd rather not drive, three tours cover versions of this day. The small-group forest hike has the most walking and at most six people. The private hike gives you your own guide for the gorge, the waterfall and the cave of Saint Dionysius. The group day trip is cheapest.

Can you do a Mount Olympus day trip from Athens?
Yes, but it is a 13-hour day: the morning train to Katerini takes about four hours each way, which leaves about five hours at the mountain.
Athens is about 450 km from the mountain. Intercity trains between Athens and Thessaloniki do not stop at Litochoro, but up to four a day stop at Katerini, the town below Dion. The day tour from Athens is built around that: the listing has you on the 07:49 train from Athens Larissis station, arriving in Katerini around 11:58, where a guide and minibus wait outside. You see Dion, Platamon castle above the sea, the Enipeas gorge and Litochoro, then take the evening train back. Train tickets are included.
Two things to know. The listing marks the Platamon castle visit and a Dion photo stop as extra fees, and it asks you to bring a passport or ID for the train. If the railway strikes, the tour runs by bus. A guest from Canada wrote: "Our driver/guide was extremely friendly and took us to many sites to fill out the day." Worth it if Olympus is a must and Athens is your only base. If you can spend a night in Thessaloniki or Litochoro, you get far more mountain for the same money.

Return train tickets from Athens, then Dion, Platamon castle and the Enipeas gorge with a guide waiting at Katerini station.
Explore the day tour from Athens Tour detailsWhat about a day trip from Katerini or the coast?
From Katerini station or the beach towns of the Olympic Riviera, a 6-hour minibus tour covers Dion, Platamon and the gorge from $71.
If you are already staying at Paralia Katerini, Leptokarya or Platamon, Olympus is the wall of mountain behind your beach. The minibus tour from Katerini picks up at Katerini train station, where the guide waits with a name sign, and covers Dion, Platamon castle and a walk to the "bathtub of Zeus" in the Enipeas gorge. Six hours, back by mid-afternoon. Check the listing for whether entry fees are included.
Driving yourself from the coast is shorter still. Platamon castle is 25 minutes from Katerini, open 08:30 to 15:30 and closed on Tuesdays, per Hellenic Heritage. For a slow hour among the trees, the olive grove walk and tasting near Platamon fits around a beach day.

How do you plan a DIY day on Mount Olympus?
Take the bus or train to Litochoro, a taxi up to Prionia, and walk the Enipeas gorge back down toward the village. Do Dion on a second morning or by car.
Without a car, the best walking day on the lower mountain is one-way down the gorge. Take the KTEL bus from Thessaloniki (almost hourly, via Katerini, to Litochoro centre) or the train to Litochoro station and a taxi into the village. Then a taxi up to Prionia, about EUR 30. From there the E4 runs down the Enipeas gorge past the old monastery and the cave of Saint Dionysios to Myloi on the edge of Litochoro: 9 km, crossing the river on wooden bridges, with lots of short climbs. Uphill it takes about 6 hours, per Visit Olympus; downhill is a little quicker, but the ups and downs remain.
Stronger hikers can go up instead: Prionia to Refuge A and back is about 11 km with 1,000 m of ascent, 5 to 6 hours. You get the high forest and a coffee at 2,100 m, but still not the summit. Prionia has free parking, toilets, a spring and a cafe-restaurant open all year. For the full transport picture, read how to get to Mount Olympus.
