Booking choice: The Dion and Olympus day trip, from $57 per person. Check dates Tour details
Dion was where the Macedonian kings sacrificed to Zeus before war. Alexander the Great held games here before he crossed into Asia in 334 BC. Today it is an archaeological park of temples, theatres and Roman baths set among plane trees and springs, with a museum in the modern village.
Greek ticket rules changed in 2024 and 2025, and old blog posts still quote half-price winter tickets that no longer exist. This post gives the current prices and hours from the Ministry of Culture's Hellenic Heritage site, as of 28 October 2026.
The quick answer
A full ticket for the Dion archaeological park costs EUR 10 and a reduced one EUR 5, the same all year since April 2025; the museum is listed at the same price. From November to March both open 08:30 to 15:30 and close on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Entry is free on 28 October and on the first and third Sunday of each month from November to March. The Dion day trip, the Athens train tour and the small-group hike include entry; the private hike does not.
How much is a ticket to Dion in 2026?
EUR 10 full and EUR 5 reduced. Hellenic Heritage lists the same price for the archaeological park and for the museum.
Since 1 April 2025 Greek sites charge one price all year, set by visitor numbers. Dion's EUR 10 matches category D, for sites with 15,000 to 75,000 visitors a year. The old rule that halved prices from November to March was scrapped at the same time, as Geotour's summary explains. Any page quoting EUR 4 or EUR 8 for Dion is out of date.
The park and the museum each show EUR 10 on Hellenic Heritage. Ask at the park ticket office whether your ticket also covers the museum before you pay twice. Online tickets are sold through the Hellenic Heritage ticket site. Many visitors qualify for free entry, and the list is longer than people expect.

When is entry to Dion free in 2026-27?
On 28 October, on the first and third Sunday of every month from November to March, and on 6 March, 18 April, 18 May and the last weekend of September.
These are national free days that apply at state sites, listed on both Dion pages at Hellenic Heritage. Today, 28 October, is one of them: it is the Ochi Day national holiday. Free Sundays fall in winter, when Dion is quieter anyway. Arrive by 08:30 because the site closes at 15:30.
Free days bring school groups and Greek families on day trips from Thessaloniki. If you want the mosaics to yourself, a paid weekday morning is the better deal.
| Free day | Date | Day of week |

| National holiday (Ochi Day) | 28 October 2026 | Wednesday |

What are Dion's opening hours in winter?
From 1 November to 31 March the park and the museum open 08:30 to 15:30 on Monday and Thursday to Sunday. Both close on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
The Tuesday and Wednesday closure catches people out. If you are driving from Thessaloniki midweek in winter, move Dion to Thursday or Monday. Last entry is 20 minutes before closing, and both are shut on 25 and 26 December, 1 January, 25 March, 1 May and Easter Sunday.
Summer is longer and different for each. From April to August the park opens daily 08:00 to 20:00, except Tuesday 08:30 to 15:30, and closing time steps back through September and October. The museum runs 11:00 to 19:00 daily from April to October, which leaves an early-morning gap: do the park first and the museum after.
| Period | Archaeological park | Museum |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Nov to 31 Mar | 08:30 to 15:30, closed Tue and Wed | 08:30 to 15:30, closed Tue and Wed |

What should you see at Dion?
The Villa of Dionysus mosaic, the sanctuaries of Zeus, Demeter and Isis, the theatres, the Roman baths, and the hydraulis in the museum.
The headline piece is the Dionysus mosaic. Excavators found it in June 1987 in the atrium of a Roman villa, and in 2015 it moved into a purpose-built gallery near the museum where you can walk round it and look down from above. The museum's other star is the hydraulis, a water organ from the 2nd century AD found in 1992: the first found in Greece and the oldest known anywhere, according to Hellenic Heritage.
In the park, walk the paved Roman road to the great baths, where statues of Asclepius and his family turned up, then out to the sanctuaries. The Isis sanctuary has a channel that stood in for the Nile. The Hellenistic theatre still hosts the summer Olympus Festival. Allow two hours for the park and an hour for the museum. The ground is low and wet in places: the sacred river Vafyras rises just east of the entrance.

Which Mount Olympus tours include Dion entry?
The Dion and Enipeas day trip, the Athens train day tour and the Salty Soil small-group hike include Dion tickets. The Dayrise private hike does not.
The Dion and Enipeas day trip from Thessaloniki lists the entrance fee plus a guided tour of the site and the museum, which is the reason to pick it over a DIY bus day. The Visit Olympus tour from Athens includes Dion entry along with the train tickets; Platamon castle is marked as an extra fee on that listing. The small-group forest hike includes Dion tickets, with an official site guide available at extra cost.
The private hike with Dayrise visits Dion on the way back but does not include the entrance fee, so add EUR 10 a head. The Katerini minibus tour mixes museum entry into its list without saying whether it is included; check that listing before you go. None of these day trips climbs the mountain. They top out around Prionia at 1,100 m at most; our day trip guide explains the difference.
| Tour | Dion entry | Dion guiding | Highest point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dion and Enipeas day trip (Thessaloniki) | Included | Guided site and museum tour | Enipeas gorge, below 1,100 m |
| Visit Olympus tour from Athens | Included | Guide on the tour | Enipeas gorge, below 1,100 m |
| Salty Soil small-group hike | Included | Tour leader; official guide extra | Forest trails, below 1,100 m |
| Dayrise private hike | Not included (EUR 10) | Private guide | Enipeas trail, below 1,100 m |
| Katerini minibus tour | Check the listing | Tour leader | Enipeas gorge, below 1,100 m |

Dion entry and a guided tour of the site and museum are in the price, then lunch and a walk in the Enipeas gorge.
Explore the Dion and Olympus day trip Tour detailsIs a winter visit to Dion worth it?
Yes, on the right day. It is quiet, often free on Sundays, and the snow on Olympus behind the columns is the best view of the year.
Winter cuts the opening hours, not the site. The park is flat and shaded, the museum is indoors, and on a clear day the snowy massif fills the sky behind the ruins. Two things to plan around: the Tuesday and Wednesday closure, and a 15:30 close that leaves little slack if you start late from Thessaloniki.
If your tour date falls on a Tuesday or Wednesday between November and March, ask the operator what replaces the Dion visit. Pair a winter Dion morning with the lower gorge near Litochoro rather than anything high; our winter refuges post explains why the high mountain is off the table until June.
Small group, Dion tickets included, and a forest walk to pools and a waterfall.
