Booking choice: The small-group forest hike, from $146 per person. Check dates Tour details
Yes, Mount Olympus is worth visiting, and you don't have to climb it to see why. Greece's highest mountain rises almost straight out of the Aegean, so a single day takes you from the ruins of a sacred Macedonian city at its foot, through a green river gorge, into beech and pine forest at 1,100 m. For hikers, the summit adds two hard, exposed days above the tree line.
It is not for everyone. If you picture temples on the summit, there are none: the gods' Olympus is myth, and the ruins are at Dion, below. If you only have time for one big sight in northern Greece and you don't like walking, Dion alone may be enough. Below, the honest case.
The quick answer
Yes. Mount Olympus is Greece's first national park, with free entry, the ruins and museum of ancient Dion at its foot and the Enipeas gorge for an easy walk. You can visit in a day from Thessaloniki. The best views are from Platamon castle, Litochoro and the coast. It is not bigger than Everest: Mytikas is 2,917 m, Everest 8,848.86 m.

Is Mount Olympus worth visiting?
Yes, for anyone who likes mountains, myth or ancient history. It combines a major archaeological site, a green river gorge and Greece's highest summit within a short drive of each other.
- The myth is real ground. The ancient Greeks put the palaces of the twelve Olympian gods here. Stefani, the sheer peak beside Mytikas, is called the Throne of Zeus.
- Dion was the sacred city of the Macedonians, where Alexander the Great sacrificed to Zeus before his Asian campaign in 334 BC.
- The nature is exceptional: about 1,700 plant species, roughly a quarter of Greece's flora, 23 of them found nowhere else, and the highest tree line in Europe at about 2,500 m.
- It is easy to reach. About 90 km from Thessaloniki, with day trips from $57.
The modern story is good too. Nobody is recorded on the summit until 2 August 1913, when Christos Kakkalos, a hunter from Litochoro, led the Swiss photographer Frédéric Boissonnas and the writer Daniel Baud-Bovy to the top, per Anavasi. Kakkalos is thought to have stood on Mytikas first, and he went on to become the mountain's official guide in 1937. The refuge on the Plateau of the Muses carries his name. A mountain that kept its top hidden until the 20th century, while the gods lived there in every school book, has a pull that photos don't explain.
Who should skip it: travellers who want a summit view without effort (there is no cable car or summit road), and anyone visiting in winter hoping to hike high. For them, the view from the coast is the visit.
Is it possible to visit Mount Olympus?
Yes. It is a national park open all year, with no entry fee, a road to Prionia at 1,100 m and marked trails. Only wild camping is banned.
Olympus became Greece's first national park on 9 June 1938 and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1981. Under the park decree of 2021, visitors may not camp freely or spend the night outdoors, and fishing in the river is banned, per GTP. You sleep in Litochoro or in one of the refuges. A EUR 6 park ticket was floated in 2021, but we found no sign it was ever brought in; parking at Prionia is free.
Anyone can drive to Prionia and walk the forest trails. The summit routes are open to anyone fit and prepared, in summer. Read how to get to Mount Olympus for the roads and buses.

What can you see on Mount Olympus without climbing?
Ancient Dion and its museum, the Enipeas gorge with its pools, the cave and old monastery of Saint Dionysios, Litochoro village and Platamon castle.
- Dion: theatres, sanctuaries of Zeus, Demeter and Isis, Roman baths, and the Villa of Dionysus mosaic. The museum holds a 2nd-century water organ, the oldest known. EUR 10 entry.
- The Enipeas gorge: the E4 path follows the river between Litochoro and Prionia, crossing it seven times on wooden bridges. The pools near Prionia are near ice-cold.
- Agios Dionysios: the old monastery, founded in 1542 and blown up by German troops in 1943, is being restored just off the Prionia road. The saint's cave is a short walk away.
- The Orlias gorge near Dion, with waterfalls and pools for summer swimming and canyoning.
- Platamon castle, a Byzantine fortress between the mountain and the sea.
The small-group forest hike packs several of these into a day, with six people at most. A guest from the US wrote: "I highly recommend this tour and encourage you to take a small group up Mt. Olympus."

From Platamon castle, with the mountain behind and the sea below. Litochoro, Dion, the hill village of Palaios Panteleimonas and, on clear days, the Thessaloniki seafront are also good.
- Platamon castle stands between Mount Olympus and the Aegean. EUR 10 entry, open 08:30 to 15:30, closed Tuesdays.
- Palaios Panteleimonas, a stone village 500 m above the Thermaic Gulf, looks across to the castle and the mountain.
- Litochoro sits right under the peaks. The Enipeas river runs through the village toward the sea.
- Dion has the mountain behind its columns; go late in the day for the best light.
- The beaches of the Olympic Riviera, from Paralia Katerini to Leptokarya, have Olympus as a backdrop.
- Thessaloniki's seafront, across the Thermaic Gulf, shows the whole massif on clear days.
Morning is usually clearest. By midday in summer, cloud gathers on the summits.

Is Mount Olympus bigger than Everest?
No. Mytikas, the summit of the Greek Olympus, is 2,917 m. Everest is 8,848.86 m, about three times higher. The giant is Olympus Mons, a volcano on Mars.
The confusion is understandable. Olympus Mons on Mars rises about 21.3 km above the Martian datum, roughly two and a half times Everest's height above sea level, and is about 600 km wide. Nobody climbs it.
| Mountain | Height | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Olympus Mons | About 21,300 m | Mars |
| Everest | 8,848.86 m | Nepal and China |
| Mount Olympus, Washington | 2,430 m | Olympic National Park, USA |
| Mount Olympus (Mytikas) | 2,917 m | Greece |
The Greek Olympus is small next to the Himalaya but big where it counts for walkers. Its prominence is 2,353 m, because it rises almost straight from the sea: on the standard route you walk up more than 1,800 m from the road end, and nearly 2,900 m if you start from the beach.
Is climbing to the summit worth it?
For fit hikers comfortable on exposed rock, yes: standing on the highest point in Greece above the cloud is the reward. For everyone else, Skolio or the Plateau of the Muses gives most of the view with less risk.
The summit takes two days for most people, a night in a refuge and a short scramble with a helmet. It is serious ground, and Greek media reported several deaths on the mountain in 2025 and 2026. If that sounds right for you, the 2-day Mytikas hike is the classic guided way up: one guest called the summit views spectacular. Its cancellation terms charge fees by date, so book once plans are firm. If you have a car and one day, the one-day summit climb starts from Kalyvia on the west side.
The honest middle ground: walk to Skolio, 2,911 m, the second-highest summit, and look across at Mytikas from 6 m lower without using your hands. How hard it is to climb Olympus has the full picture.

The full climb: two days with mountain guides, a night in a refuge at 2,697 m and Mytikas if the weather allows.

- Two days: the summit via Refuge A or the Plateau of the Muses.
- Three days: one for Dion and Litochoro, two for the climb. Add a slow afternoon with the olive grove walk and tasting near Platamon as a rest day.

That is a different place: Mt. Olympus Water & Theme Park is in Wisconsin Dells, USA. This site covers the mountain in Greece.
If you searched for Mt. Olympus versus Noah's Ark, you want Wisconsin, not Greece. Mt. Olympus Water & Theme Park opened in 1990 and its outdoor parks cover more than 200 acres, per its own site. Noah's Ark, next door in Lake Delton, opened in 1979, covers 70 acres and calls itself America's largest waterpark. Their own websites have current prices and opening dates. We don't sell tickets for either. If you meant the mountain where Zeus lived, read on from the top of this page.
